How To Balance Fitness Goals With Lifestyle
You probably can’t! The likelihood is at least one of these will lack perfection at any one time.
For example, if you’re killing it at work, maybe that takes some of your energy when you’re with your family. Or maybe you’re focus is on your health, so your diet is on point, and you’re killing it in the gym, spending loads of relaxing time with the family, but perhaps you’re less focused on work.
The point is that it’s very difficult to have everything perfected at any time.
We can actually take a lot of solace in this because it means we don’t need to stress when one thing takes a hit. If you’re training or nutrition takes a bit of a hit because it’s the summer holidays, and you’re spending more time with the family, then that’s cool. It is what it is!
Something that is very important to focus on is consistency, yes we may have periods where things are not 100% perfect, maybe they are 80% or 50%, but the key thing here is to never give up, realise when you are falling off and focus on bringing it back.
Too many people slowly slip away and instead of just doing say 20% of what is needed, just decide to give up and do 0%.
If you give up and do nothing, you will never achieve your fitness goals so even 20% is better then 0%.
What can we do to keep things as balanced as possible
The key, is to keep a base level of everything. If your diet takes a hit, just ensure you keep some foundations in place, such as eating protein and veg with most meals. If you’re training needs to take a hit, see if you can just squeeze in 20 minute sessions. If your sleep needs to take a hit, then just try to get at least 6 hours if you can. You get the idea.
Think of the balance between training and lifestyle like a seesaw with equally sized kids on each side. It’s a good balance, but each side will go up and down.
This is how we should expect things to play out. Overall, pretty balanced, but with inevitable ups and downs.
Things won’t be perfect, at least not all the time, and that’s okay. We just need things to be good enough to keep you pushing forward!
Focus on time management with your fitness goals
If you know you are very busy on certain days, or maybe every friday you have a date night, whatever the situation is, planning and preparing for this is going to help a lot, maybe you are a morning person, if so wake up a little bit earlier and get to the gym before your day starts, this in beds a goal you have into your daily routine and keeps you accountable.
If you know one day you like a takeaway or going out for dinner with loved ones, plan for it, make sure to eat a little less on that day so it does not impact your fitness goals, your online coach can help you do this
Create a routine
Something that helps a lot of people i coach is creating an overall routine for your week, just like a scale, you need to balance leisure, work, family and fitness then you are sure to achieve success in what you are doing, your online fitness coach can help you achieve this.
Do things you enjoy
We all know that if you are hating what you are doing, you are much more likely to give up on it in the future, so many people try and do everything 100% and often times they can keep it up, for a few weeks or a few months, maybe even a year, but often times they do eventually end up giving up, i would rather have my clients do everything at 50% for 5 years and see great progress, then i would have them do everything at 100% for 6 months then give up, just like the tortoise and the rabbit, who eventually won ? we all know the answer.
Do not be too hard on yourself if you fall off
Even professional athletes have time off and often if you are methodical about it, can lead to more progress as we are all humans at the end of the day, we need time to recover and wind down not just for our bodies but also for our minds, keeping enthusiastic is what is going to lead to long term success.
